Raising Awareness: the Lionesses take a stand

The Lionesses take a stand: players remove their names from their shirt in encounter vs Australia.

On Tuesday night, the England Women's Team suffered a 0-2 defeat to Australia, therefore ending their 30 match unbeaten streak. Despite this, according to Leah Williamson the defeat would only make them stronger.

“[It's] absolutely not a setback. You have to take blessings in disguise, maybe that is not the worst thing that can happen to us. We wanted to learn this whole time, we wanted to be pushed to our limit and we need to take it up to a new level." (England Football).

She went on to add:

"In the past we have won those games but to lose it gives you a bit of fire.”

The game was played at Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium, in an encounter that witnessed some extra-sport events.

So, why did the Lionesses take a stand?

Three English players used their platform to raise awareness against Dementia, an illness suffered by 1 in 3 UK people. They did this by removing their names from the back of their shirts?

In the second half, three separate players wore the nameless shirts to highlight the uncertainty and memory loss that people with the disease frequently suffer.

Sarina Wiegman, the England manager has stated: "Tonight was a chance for both sets of players to come together in recognition of the many people living with dementia and their families and friends who help them."

In addition, to generate money for the Alzheimer's Society International, the shirts will now be put up for auction.

An admirable gesture from Lionesses, but also from the Australian side who showed support by also removing their shirt names.
