New Competition: Women’s Club World Cup
FIFA announce inaugural Women's Competitions
Following several years of talks, FIFA have announced that a Women’s Club World Cup could be launched in 2025. Despite the public statement, no plans have yet been approved.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino, took a moment at the Qatar World Cup to talk about the future of women’s football. In concrete which competitions would be introduced.
“We want to create a new women’s Club World Cup and a new Fifa Futsal Women’s World Cup every four years”
He went on to describe some competition formats that are looking to be modified.
“We would like to see if the women’s Olympic tournament can have 16 teams like the men’s does.”
Why did it take so long to introduce a Women's Club World Cup?
The first international women’s tournament between clubs to take place was the International Women's Club Championship (IWCC). In 2012, four teams were a part of it: Olympique Lyonnais, Canberra United, INAC Kobe Leonessa, and NTV Beleza.

From the get go, the organizers (Nadeshiko League & Japan Football) announced that it would run for the 3 years with the idea that FIFA pick it up after. In the following to editions, teams like Chelsea and Arsenal took part in it. Despite its, FIFA never endorsed the tournament.
From 2015 – 2019, there were several propositions from entities and a few international club friendlies but again no stepping stones.
Finally, in 2019, Gianni Infantino confirmed that there was something in the plans but it was only yesterday (December 2022) that it was publicly announced.
An idea that has been cooking for over 10 years but that has yet not been approved. Something that could be beneficial for women considering there are currently five back-to-back international tournaments. These starting in 2021 and ending in 2025 for women’s national teams. Therefore it is safe to say that there are no proper guaranties that we will see a Women’s Club World Cup in 2025.
